Summer 2020
FROM THE OFFICE OF GIFT PLANNING
A Source of Strength
by Ericka L. Webb, Director of Gift Planning
What a long, strange summer this has been, as a global pandemic, widespread unrest, and economic turmoil have upended so much of what we take for granted. But even throughout these challenges, Boston College has remained a source of strength and inspiration—moving online to protect our students’ health, seeking to spread Jesuit values of inclusiveness and peace, and carefully stewarding our resources to ensure the University’s financial stability.
Paying It Forward

Estate Planning in the Time of COVID-19
The coronavirus pandemic and subsequent economic downturn have caused many people to pause and take stock of their current financial and estate plans.
BC’s First-ever Engineering Program
Starting next fall, Boston College will launch a brand-new, human-centered engineering program. Among the first of its kind, the program will be closely physically located in the new state-of-the-art Schiller Institute for Integrated Science and Society—will combine BC’s liberal arts core with foundations of engineering, design and systems thinking applications, and service-focused capstone experiences. Faculty and students will work in collaborative teams and across disciplines to find solutions that address critical human needs in the areas of health, energy, and the environment. Visit bc.edu/schiller for more information.
University Leader Perspectives
In April, Boston College launched Beacon Leadership Conversations, a virtual series hosted by Jim Husson, senior vice president for University Advancement. Each one-hour discussion features campus leaders sharing first-hand perspectives about ways in which Boston College is adapting during the unprecedented challenges presented by COVID-19. Topics include the need to pivot to remote learning, the need for racial justice in American and a new forum to begin in the fall as well as other topics about student life and our nursing alumni making an impact in our communities. Watch and listen to these recorded conversations at bc.edu/blc that are available as webinars or podcasts.
Eagles For Eagles Fund Update
This spring, many from the BC community immediately rallied to support fellow Eagles who were affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. David Griffith ’68, P’00, ’02, ’06, University Trustee and chair of the Shaw Society noted, “Given what a challenging year it’s been, I knew there was no better time than now to give to the Eagles for Eagles Fund. Raising more than $1.3 million for those in need during these unprecedented times, the fund demonstrates what an immense impact we can make when we come together as men and women for others.” Visit bc.edu/eaglesforeagles to see the impact and show your support.
Boston College: Today, Tomorrow, Always
On what would have been Commencement day, Boston College alumni community reflected on the past and welcomed the Class of 2020 into the BC family by sharing a special video with the entire University community. “Boston College: Today, Tomorrow, Always” includes vintage images from the Heights over the years, while sharing images of alumni today with “For Boston” performed by Nova Wang ’21. Watch the video at bc.edu/classof2020 to experience this memorable celebration.
